Le Mahotella Queens sono una vera istituzione, un monumento vivente alla musica africana.
Per chi non le conoscesse, ricordiamo che Hilda Tloubatla, Mildred Mangxola e Nobesuthu Mbadu hanno inventato all’inizio degli anni Sessanta il “mbaquanga”: un misto di musiche tradizionali (Zulu, Sotho, Shangaan, Xhosa e altri), di maraibi (jazz sudafricano) più rhythm and blues, soul e gospel. Come se non bastasse, le tre signore sono state per anni in prima linea nella lotta all’apartheid. Come non esserne ammiratori spassionati? (by Marco Conigliani)
