Gianmaria Potenza (Venezia, 1936) è uno scultore e pittore italiano
Si avvicina all’arte grazie agli zii, Primo Potenza, bravissimo pittore, ed Ennio Pettenello, abile scultore. Nel 1947 si iscrive all’Istituto d’Arte e, in seguito, frequenta l’Accademia di Venezia. A soli sedici anni esordisce in una mostra collettiva e nel 1954 è invitato alla Biennale d’Arte di Venezia come miglior allievo dell’Istituto d’Arte. Da allora saranno otto le sue presenze alla Biennale (l’ultima nel 2009) e, complessivamente, ha partecipato a oltre 110 mostre tra personali e collettive.
Imponente la sua produzione su committenza: oltre 120 opere realizzate per banche, chiese, scuole, enti pubblici, aziende, hotel e grandi navi da crociera. Ha collaborato con grandi architetti, tra cui Pier Luigi Nervi, Giò Ponti, Franco Albini. Insieme a Ulderico Moretti, nel 1968 fonda la nota vetreria “La Murrina”, attività che cede nel 1975 per dedicarsi esclusivamente alla scultura.

Gianmaria Potenza (Venice, 1936) is an Italian sculptor and painter.
He was introduced to art by his uncles, Primo Potenza, a brilliant painter, and Ennio Pettenello, a skilled sculptor. In 1947, he enrolled in the Art Institute and then attended the Academy of Venice. He made his debut in a group exhibition at the age of sixteen, and in 1954 he was invited to the Venice Biennale as the best student of the Art Institute. Since then, he has been invited to the Biennale eight times (the last in 2009), and has participated in over 110 exhibitions, both solo and group.
His commissioned work is impressive: over 120 works created for banks, churches, schools, public institutions, companies, hotels, and cruise ships. He has collaborated with great architects, including Pier Luigi Nervi, Gio Ponti, and Franco Albini. In 1968, he founded the renowned glassworks “La Murrina” with Ulderico Moretti, an activity he gave up in 1975 to dedicate himself exclusively to sculpture.
