Certi uomini non ci pensano mai.
Tu sì. Ti presentavi alla porta
dicendo che mi avevi quasi portato dei fiori
ma qualcosa era andata storta.
Il fiorista era chiuso. O un dubbio ti assaliva –
di quelli che sorgono all’infinito
a tipi come noi. Forse, pensavi,
io i tuoi fiori non avrei gradito.
Sorridendo allora ti avevo abbracciato.
Solo il sorriso mi resta ora.
Ma guarda, i fiori che avevi quasi portato
durano tuttora.

Some men never think of it.
You did. You’d come along
And say you’d nearly brought me flowers
But something had gone wrong.
The shop was closed. Or you had doubts –
The sort that minds like ours
Dream up incessantly. You thought
I might not want your flowers.
It made me smile and hug you then.
Now I can only smile.
But, look, the flowers you nearly brought
Have lasted all this while.

Wendy Cope (Erth, 1945) è una poetessa inglese.
Si è laureata in storia al St. Hilda’s College a Oxford e ha insegnato nella scuola primaria per molti anni. Ha poi lavorato come giornalista per diverse testate tra cui lo Spectator. Le sue raccolte di poesia Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis (Faber, 1986) e Serious Concerns (Faber, 1991) sono state entrambe dei bestseller, grazie anche alla sua vena ironica e parodistica, e l’hanno resa famosa. Altre celebri raccolte tra le molte altre sono The River Girl (1991), Two Cures for Love (2008), Christmas Poems (2017), Anedoctal Evidence (2018) e The Orange and other poems (2023)
Ha curato numerose antologie, tra cui The Orchard Book of Funny Poems (1993), Is That The New Moon? (1989), The Funny Side: 101 Humorous Poems (1998) The Faber Book of Bedtime Stories (1999) and Heaven on Earth: 101 Happy Poems (2001).
È molto letta e amata in patria.
Wendy Cope ha ricevuto un Cholmondeley Award nel 1987 e il Michael Braude Award for Light Verse (American Academy of Arts and Letters) in 1995. È Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, e nel 2010 ha ricevuto un OBE. Vive a Ely nel Cambridgeshire.
