I Soft Cell sono stati un duo britannico di synth pop formato da Marc Almond (voce) e David Ball (sintetizzatori), originari di Leeds, Inghilterra.
Il loro successo più noto è il singolo “Tainted Love” del 1981, una cover di un brano soul del 1965 di Gloria Jones, che divenne un successo mondiale raggiungendo la prima posizione in 17 paesi e restando a lungo nelle classifiche, in particolare negli Stati Uniti. Il loro album di debutto, “Non Stop Erotic Cabaret” (1981), ebbe un grande riscontro di critica e di pubblico, seguito da una serie di album e raccolte di remix.
Dopo alcune tensioni interne che portarono a sciogliere il duo nel corso degli anni Ottanta, i Soft Cell si sono riuniti nel 2002, continuando a pubblicare musica fino al 2025, anno della morte di David Ball.
