Negli anni successivi ha continuato a fotografare in Italia e all’estero, concentrandosi su temi sociali e umanitari.

Lisetta Carmi (Genoa, 1924 – Cisternino, Brindisi, 2022) was one of the leading figures in postwar photojournalism.
Born into a Jewish family and forced into exile, Carmi came to photography after a long career as a concert pianist. In the early 1960s, she began to use photography as a means of political engagement and personal inner exploration.
Her early work focused on the everyday lives of ordinary people, particularly the workers of the port of Genoa. In 1960, she began photographing the transvestites of Genoa, at a time when homosexuality was still illegal in Italy. This work, published in the book “Travesti” in 1965, was one of the first to give a human and dignified portrait of transgender people.
In the years that followed, she continued to photograph in Italy and abroad, focusing on social and humanitarian issues. She photographed poor children in India, workers in China, and psychiatric patients in Italy. Her work was published in books and magazines around the world, and it has won numerous awards.
Lisetta Carmi was an independent and non-conformist woman who always sought to give a voice to the weak and marginalized. Her photography is characterized by a attention to detail, human sensitivity, and deep humanity.
