Hans Stoltenberg Lerche (1867-1920), nato a Düsseldorf da padre norvegese, si forma come ceramista in Germania tra il 1884 ed il 1886.
Nel 1886 si trasferisce in Italia, dove crea alcune tra le ceramiche più interessanti prodotte nel nostro paese nel periodo Liberty, oltre a bronzetti e gioielli. Lerche entra a contatto con il mondo del vetro muranese nel 1911, quando viene introdotto presso la fornace dei Fratelli Toso da Alberto Martini. Lì realizza alcune opere innovative e originali, in cui la tipica lavorazione e modellazione a caldo del mondo vetrario veneziano si coniuga con lo stile Art Nouveau. Le sue creazioni si discostano completamente da quanto si era visto sino ad allora a Murano.
La vetreria Fratelli Toso, fondata nel 1854 dall’iniziativa di sei fratelli Toso, è stata una delle vetrerie più rinomate nel panorama artistico della Murano dell’Ottocento e del Novecento.
Nel 2024 ha festeggiato il suo 170° anniversario. Nel corso degli anni, generazione dopo generazione, i Toso con le loro diversificate vocazioni e competenze – maestri, tecnici, disegnatori, dirigenti – hanno contribuito al successo di una realtà produttiva che ha saputo costantemente aggiornarsi e rinnovarsi anche grazie a collaborazioni con artisti e designer esterni, pur mantenendo sempre un carattere familiare.
Hans Stoltenberg Lerche (1867–1920), born in Düsseldorf to a Norwegian father, trained as a ceramic artist in Germany between 1884 and 1886.
In 1886 he moved to Italy, where he created some of the most remarkable ceramics produced in the country during the Art Nouveau period, alongside small bronzes and jewellery. Lerche first encountered the world of Murano glassmaking in 1911, when Alberto Martini introduced him to the Fratelli Toso furnace. There he produced a series of innovative and highly original works in which the traditional Venetian techniques of hot-worked and modelled glass were combined with the Art Nouveau aesthetic. His creations marked a radical departure from anything previously seen in Murano.
Founded in 1854 through the initiative of the six Toso brothers, the Fratelli Toso glassworks became one of the most renowned names in the artistic landscape of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Murano glass production.
In 2024 the company celebrated its 170th anniversary. Over the decades, generation after generation, members of the Toso family—with their diverse vocations and expertise as master craftsmen, technicians, designers, and directors—contributed to the success of a manufacturing enterprise that consistently evolved and renewed itself, also through collaborations with external artists and designers, while always preserving its strong family identity.
