Paolo Gubinelli was born in Matelica, in the province of Macerata, in 1945. At the age of five, he developed a passion for music, learning to play the accordion and later taking up the clarinet and saxophone.
He graduated from the Art Institute of Macerata. At the age of twenty, he moved to Milan, where he continued his studies in graphic design and architecture. During this period, he came into contact with Lucio Fontana and developed a close and lasting friendship with Bruno Munari, while also establishing relationships with other leading figures of the contemporary art scene.
After a year, he moved to Rome, where he met the renowned artist Alberto Burri, as well as Edgardo Mannucci, Giuseppe Uncini, Sol LeWitt, Enrico Castellani, and Piero Dorazio.
In 1968, Gubinelli settled in Florence, where he continues to live and work.
He pursued his studies in architectural and graphic design while progressively developing a distinctive artistic practice centered on paper. His work explores the material through incisions, folds, cuts, and watercolour, transforming the surface of the paper into a delicate interplay of light, space, and texture.
Over the course of his career, Gubinelli has participated in numerous exhibitions, and his works are held in the permanent collections of major libraries, museums, and state archives.
In 2011, he was invited to participate in the 54th Venice Biennale, exhibiting at the Italian Pavilion at the Arsenale. Invited by Vittorio Sgarbi and selected by Tonino Guerra, he presented an installation comprising 28 sheets of paper, each measuring 102 × 72 cm, accompanied by an unpublished manuscript by Tonino Guerra.
