I Dire Straits sono un gruppo rock britannico fondato nel 1977 da Mark Knopfler (voce, chitarra, autore dei brani), suo fratello David Knopfler (chitarra), John Illsley (basso) e Pick Withers (batteria).
La band si distinse per un rock limpido con forti influenze di blues, country, folk e jazz, in controtendenza rispetto al punk e alla new wave dominanti all’epoca. Il loro primo album, “Dire Straits” (1978), ebbe un successo clamoroso e li portò rapidamente alla fama mondiale. Nel corso degli anni la formazione subì cambiamenti, ma Mark Knopfler e John Illsley rimasero sempre presenti. Nel 2018 i Dire Straits furono inseriti nella Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, riconoscimento della loro importanza musicale. Il gruppo è noto anche per lo stile unico del chitarrista Mark Knopfler, considerato un virtuoso della chitarra.
