Valerio Berruti (born in Alba in 1977) is an Italian artist and illustrator.
Berruti graduated in Art Criticism from the DAMS programme at the University of Turin. In 1995, while still young, he purchased and restored a deconsecrated seventeenth-century church in Verduno, in the province of Cuneo, transforming it into his studio and creative workspace.
His artistic practice is built around simple, instantly recognisable imagery: silhouettes of children, frontal figures suspended in space, flat backgrounds, and humble materials such as jute, concrete, steel and fresco. He also employs the ancient technique of fresco painting on contemporary supports, combining it with sculpture and digital animation.
Childhood is a recurring theme in his work, conceived not as an object of nostalgia, but as a universal space in which identity has yet to take shape and anything remains possible.
Berruti has also worked as an illustrator. In 2014, he created the cover for Andrea Bajani’s La vita non è in ordine alfabetico, published by Einaudi. In 2016, he published Come il vento tra i salici with Gallucci, a flipbook comprising 71 plates that brings to life Beppe Fenoglio’s Italian translation of Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows.
