Giotto (Vespignano, 1267 circa – Firenze, 1337) è stato un pittore e architetto italiano.
Con la sua pittura ha portato ad una grande rivoluzione nell’arte figurativa, diventando il modello d’ispirazione per gli artisti del Rinascimento.
Formatosi probabilmente nella bottega di Cimabue, Giotto realizzò le prime opere documentate intorno al 1290-1295, come la Maestà di Borgo San Lorenzo e il Crocifisso di Santa Maria Novella a Firenze, oltre alle Storie di Isacco nella basilica superiore di Assisi. Il suo stile si distingue per volume, profondità e naturalismo emotivo, visibile nelle scene della vita di San Francesco nella basilica inferiore di Assisi.
Opere principali
Tra le sue opere più celebri spiccano gli affreschi della Cappella Scrovegni a Padova (1305 circa), con il Giudizio Universale e la Vita di Cristo e Maria, capolavori di prospettiva e dramma umano. A Firenze dipinse la Cappella Peruzzi e Bardi in Santa Croce, mentre come architetto diresse dal 1334 i cantieri del Duomo e iniziò il Campanile di Giotto.

Giotto (Vespignano, c. 1267 – Florence, 1337) was an Italian painter and architect.
Through his work, he brought about a profound revolution in figurative art, becoming a key source of inspiration for Renaissance artists.
Probably trained in the workshop of Cimabue, Giotto produced his first documented works around 1290–1295, including the Maestà of Borgo San Lorenzo and the Crucifix for Santa Maria Novella in Florence, as well as the Stories of Isaac in the Upper Basilica of Assisi. His style is characterized by a strong sense of volume, spatial depth, and emotional naturalism, clearly evident in the scenes from the life of Saint Francis in the Lower Basilica of Assisi.
Major works
Among his most celebrated achievements are the frescoes of the Scrovegni (Arena) Chapel in Padua (c. 1305), featuring the Last Judgment and the cycles of the Life of Christ and the Virgin Mary, masterpieces of perspective and human drama. In Florence, he painted the Peruzzi and Bardi Chapels in Santa Croce. As an architect, from 1334 onward he directed the construction works of Florence Cathedral and began the design of Giotto’s Campanile.
