Sananda Maitreya aka Terence Trent D’Arby (New York, 1962), è un cantautore e polistrumentista statunitense.
Nel 1987, Terence Trent D’Arby, all’epoca venticinquenne, fece il suo debutto con l’album Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D’Arby, che ottenne un enorme successo, vendendo un milione di copie nei primi tre giorni e oltre dieci milioni nel totale.
L’album, acclamato dalla critica, lo paragonò a icone come Prince e Michael Jackson. D’Arby conquistò dischi di platino in vari paesi e divenne una figura di spicco nel panorama musicale. Tuttavia, il suo successo si ridimensionò rapidamente; nei successivi otto anni pubblicò solo tre album, i cui risultati furono deludenti rispetto al debutto.
Dieci anni dopo l’uscita del suo primo disco, decise di trasferirsi in Europa, cambiò nome in Sananda Maitreya e si ritirò temporaneamente dalle scene, lasciando dietro di sé una carriera che avrebbe potuto essere straordinaria.
